The new cinema, “Ek Phnom Cinema”, opened on 23rd December 2017, at Borey Raksmey Battambang, Battambang province, with the aims to make this evolution province has their own cinema like other regions and to promote movie, especially Khmer movies to local residents.
“Ek Phnom Cinema”, a new cinema in Battambang province
Come up with a great idea, Mr. Heng Tola, the president of Ek Phnom Cinema, said that, “Nowadays, Battambang has a population of approximately 1.3 million people and it is considered to be one of the biggest provinces in Cambodia, but still had not even a single local cinema before we arrived. Because of the previous cinema disappeared long time ago, that’s make people here hard to find cinemas. And whenever they want to watch a movie, they need to travel to other city or province such as Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, where they can find cinemas”.
Spending around 500K USD, the cinema has one big hall to serve audience, which starts from 11:30am to 9pm. And there are many Khmer movies are showing, while the big amount of Hollywood movies are coming soon.
“However, we have some difficulties during our operation. First of all, we lack of Human resources. As we know, we haven’t had a cinema for such a long time, so Ek Phnom Cinema is identical to be the newest one here and many people don’t know the process or how to work in cinema sector. Another one is that we have modern devices like other digital cinemas, and some of our people have no idea to use this kind of technology devices. No matter what, I think these problems will be solved soon”, Tola added.
Mr. Tola says the cinema will be enlarged by adding more halls to serve the audience, and it will not be just a cinema to show movies, but also a studio for shooting and producing movie.
“After operating many days plus with the promotion that is FREE for people who are above 50-year-old, we have received big support from local residents. And I hope that we can gain more and more support in order to be a part of promoting movie industry”, He continued.
