Amazing Khmer Movie “Diamond Island” Premiere Screening Yesterday

A Khmer movie “Diamond Island” directed by French-Cambodian filmmaker, CHOU Davy, explores the contrasts between poverty and development which characterized by two siblings separated from each other for several years. The siblings are played by amateur and first-timer actors. Furthermore, around 10 other young first time actors complete the casting, their daily job being taxi drivers, construction workers, clowns, and students.

“I cast amateurs in my movie because I’d like to show Cambodia how normal people can play their natural parts on the big screen,” expressed CHOU. “I hope this will inspire other young Cambodian youth to challenge themselves to become who they want to be and prove their talents on international stages. I also wanted to show, internationally and locally, a portrait of modern Cambodia, different from the usual representation of past history (Khmer Rouge or Angkorian time) or of the depiction of poverty and prostitution.”
