“Angry Birds” makes merry debut

We’re already halfway through 2016, and we’ve seen quite a number of successful animated movies hitting the silver screen this year, including Disney’s February release, “Zootopia”, and 20th Century Fox’s January release, “Kung Fu Panda 3”.

Sony Pictures is bringing its own animated movie into the mix – “The Angry Birds Movie”, adapted from one of the most popular mobile games.

The big screen adaptation opened in Cambodia last week, bringing with it a high expectation from the public as it is Sony’s first animated movie this year.

“The Angry Birds Movie” is only scheduled to be released in the US market this 20 May, but its major release in 74 markets last week is already raking up remarkable numbers internationally, beating the collection of past hits such as “The Croods”, “How To Train your Dragons”, “Rio” and more.

The movie opened in Cambodia on 12 May, easily becoming the highest-grossing opening for an animated movie and highest opening weekend, beating “Kung Fu Panda 3” and “Zootopia” in the animated movie category.

It is expected to earn more during the second week, with the help of word of mouth. Audiences are sure to be amazed by the outstanding animation, cinematography and hilarious storyline.
