Police found 80 per cent of Cambodian night commercial drivers were high on methamphetamine.

Drivers were stopped at temporary checkpoints set up along highways in Battambang province where they were required to take a urine test. These checkpoints were put in place in response to an increase in deaths caused by traffic accidents in August.

According to Cambodia Daily, nearly 30 people have died in traffic-related accidents since the beginning of August. This compared to 32 deaths in the first seven months of 2016.

Police say they found traces of methamphetamine in 80 per cent of the samples collected. Most of these drivers were commercial drivers

However, drivers who tested positive for drugs were merely given a warning before they were let off. They were also required to thumbprint a statement agreeing not to drive under the influence.
