Biography and Achievements of The Cambodian Heroic King

Every year on 15th October, it’s the Commemoration Day of King’s Father, which reminds Cambodian people about deepness sorrow when the Heroic King, Norodom Sihanouk, passed away.

King Norodom Sihanouk was born on 31st October 1922, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. In his childhood, from 1930 to 1940, the king went to FRANCOIS BAUDOIN Elementary school and Sisowath High School, Phnom Penh. Then he continued his study at CHASSELOUP LAUBAT high school at Vietnam.

King Norodom Sihanouk was born on 31st October 1922, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. In his childhood, from 1930 to 1940, the king went to FRANCOIS BAUDOIN Elementary school and Sisowath High School, Phnom Penh. Then he continued his study at CHASSELOUP LAUBAT high school at Vietnam.

In 1941, Norodom Sihanouk became a king and many achievements are accomplished from that time. 6 years later, 1947, he got success in claiming back Khmer provinces which were taken by Thailand during the Second World War, such as Battambang, Siem Reap, Kompong Thom, and Steng Treng.

After 4 years diligence in his work to claim the real independence from France on 9th November 1953, and this is one of the biggest achievement of King Norodom Sihanouk. On 2nd March 1955, King Sihanouk abdicated the throne. The Sangkum Era has begun and at that time King Sihanouk became the Prime Minister of Cambodia. Doing this, can earn him the freedom to pursue politics while continuing to enjoy the deference that he had received from his subjects when he was a King.

Once in office, King Sihanouk as the prime minister viewed socialism as an ideal concept for establishing social equality and fostering national cohesion. He embarked on a national program of Buddhist socialism by promoting socialist principles on the one hand while maintaining the kingdom’s Buddhist culture on the other. Another remarkable achievement, on 18th April 1955, King Norodom Sihanouk participated in the 1st summit Africa-Asian at Bandung, Indonesia, and announced the policy of neutrality for Cambodia.

Later on, King Sihanouk has been success in making Cambodia to be part of United Nations.​ Moreover, during his reign too many infrastructures and facilities were established such as Independence Monument, International Airport, Siem Reap International Airport, Olympic Stadium, Universities, national roads and bridges, factories, hospitals, school.

Even there are many bad situations in 1970s, which pulled out power from King Sihanouk and put the country in chaos. The King still was there and struggle those bad situations with Cambodian people.

Following many great achievements and loyalty to the country, King Norodom Sihanouk was given an official title “His Majesty King Norodom Sihanouk, The Great Heroic King, King-Father of Khmer Independence, Territorial Integrity and National Unity”.

King Norodom Sihanok passed away on 15th October 2012, which left despair and grief to all Cambodian people.
