Cambodian Space Project’s Lead Singer, Kak Chanthy, Dies at 38

Phnom Penh- The Cambodian Space Project lead singer, Kak Chanthy has passed away after a tragic traffic accident following the early hours of March 20th. The band known for reviving the spirits and vibes of rock n’ roll from the 60s in Cambodia is now left without a frontwoman.

Chanthy, 38, was travelling in an auto-rickshaw with a British friend along Mao Tse Toung Boulevard, when they were struck by a 21-year old driver of a Toyota Prius. Support from social media was strong as Chanthy was a very talented singer, who rejuvenated the rock n roll atmosphere from the 1960s.

Born in Prey Veng province on February 26th

, 1980, Chanthy was born in a time after bloodshed reigned across the country with the elimination of intellectuals and artists. Having to support her family at a very young age, by farming rice before working in rubber plantations.

Upon moving to Phnom Penh, she earned enough to survive by laboring at building sites. With a terrible encounter, she was once kidnapped and tied to a bed by an owner of a beauty salon however was able to escape with the help of a woman after yelling very loudly.
