Drivers on the Phone Will Now be Fined When Caught
Phnom Penh- According to an announcement by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, those who use their phones while driving will be taken to the police station in order to be fined and be reeducated on the existing laws and dangers presented.
The ministry itself has launched a campaign to solve this ongoing issue.
More than 50 percent of all drivers in Cambodia use their mobile phones while driving. Some eat and play around with their passengers while driving and this can cause traffic accidents as well as inconsistent and dangerous driving. The study shows that at least one in four people using their mobile phones while driving has caused traffic crashes, according to a study by WHO (World Health Organization).

Mrs. Min Meanvy, the Secretary General of the National Road Safety Committee, said, “A collaboration of the police and the civil society organizations and youths are conducting campaigns and workshops on public road education for drivers on all types of vehicles. The law states that drivers who are able to use mobile phones must have a built-in communication device such as Bluetooth systems or headsets while driving”.
