Four Paralympians Beat Olympic Gold Time in 1500m
On Sunday, Algeria’s Abdellatif Baka took home gold with a world record time of 3 minutes and 48.29 seconds in the 1500m for the visually impaired. That’s 1.71 seconds faster than American Matthew Centrowitz’s gold-medal time (3:50) just a few weeks ago at the Olympics 1500m final.
Remember the Paralympics? Yeah, that other major international sporting event we often forget about because the Olympics are over—the one that gets way less funding and attention compared to the Olympics.
Well here’s reason why you should pay attention to the Paralympics.
On Sunday, Algeria’s Abdellatif Baka took home gold with a world record time of 3 minutes and 48.29 seconds in the 1500m for the visually impaired.
That’s 1.71 seconds faster than American Matthew Centrowitz’s gold-medal time (3:50.00) just a few weeks ago at the Olympics 1500m final.
In fact, three other athletes besides Baka ran faster than Centrowitz—silver medallist Tamiru Demisse of Ethiopia (3:48.59), bronze medallist Henry Kirwa of Kenya (3:49.59), and Fouad Baka of Algeria who came fourth (3:49.84).
Centrowitz’s Olympic final was regarded as a slow-paced and tactical one.
Cambodia hasn’t participated in the Paralympics since the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
