Many people have already known about the famous “First They Killed My Father”, but did you know that there are also sequels to this best-selling novel?
Apparently, “First They Killed My Father” is the first book of Loung’s Ung trilogy, and it is followed by “Lucky Child” and concluded with “Lulu In The Sky”.
1. First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers published in 2000, the book is about Loung Ung’s gripping memoir of her family’s struggling lives during the Khmer Rouge regime. The book was selected by the Asian/Pacific American Librarians’ Association for “Excellence in Adult Non-fiction Literature”, and has been published in 11 languages. And lately, the book has been adapted into a Netflix original movie with Angelina Jolie as the director, which will be released on Netflix this September 15th.

2. Lucky Child: A Daughter From Cambodia Reunites With The Sister She Left Behind
As a sequel to “First They Killed My Father”, this book describes about Loung Ung’s school years in Vermont as a Cambodian refugee, and how she became the “lucky child” that was chosen to accompany her eldest brother to America and leaving her other brothers and sister behind. There are also alternative chapters that give voice to her sister, Chou Ung, talking about her experiences as a genocide survivor being left behind in a war-torn Cambodia.
3. Lulu In The Sky: A Daughter of Cambodia Finds Love, Healing, and Double Happiness
The last book of the trilogy, “Lulu In The Sky” talks about Loung Ung’s college experience and her first step into adulthood, love, activism, and marriage. The book also describes about her journey back to Cambodia to reconnect with her mother’s spirit, focuses on healing the landscape of her birth, and moving towards happiness.
