Government Launched Halal Certification in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH – On 06 March, the Commerce Ministry announced a standardized certification process for halal food in Cambodia, cooperating with the highest council for Islamic Religious Affairs Cambodia.

According to local reports, Commerce Ministry Secretary of State, Mao Thora, said in a workshop, “this new regulation would build Halal consumer’s confidence over the food in Cambodia without suspicious”.

“Companies, which sell or produce halal products are now able to apply for the certificate as well as the label”.

“The label has been developed for 8 years, he wants it to be recognized all over the world to gain benefit from Muslim tourism. Having our own halal logo means that companies will no longer need to use halal certifications from other countries for their products ”, the Secretary of State added.

According to local reports, the highest council for Islamic Religious Affairs Cambodia will work closely with the ministry to ensure the high quality and trustworthy of the certificates.

Sim Mohddaud, a member of the Highest Council for Islamic Religious Affairs of Cambodia, said the cooperation would build trust of Muslims on the implementation.

“Before, it was a bit challenging for Muslim people or Muslim tourists to trust the Cambodian market” regarding halal criteria, he said.

In Cambodia, Ly Ly Food Industry Co is the only company that has the halal certificate from ministry, according to Mr. Thora.

Ly Ly’s CEO, Keo Mom, also raised up the important of halal certificate in reaching the halal markets in countries outside Cambodia such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Korean and etc.
