A Local Production Complains About Insufficient Showtime

Phnom Penh- There is a remarkable controversy in the movie industry recently, related to the complaint of one local production about its movie showtime at cinemas in Cambodia.

The local production known as “LD Picture” has stated many posts on its Facebook page in order to complain cinemas in Cambodia that they are offering not enough showtime for the movie “Choup Soy”, which is screening at cinemas currently.

“Choup Soy” is the Khmer comedy movie, which is directed by LD Picture production.

The production has stated that, “The movie is really good and gain more support from audience, but it’s not sure that it can make profit. We really need the encouragement from cinemas, whether they can give us more golden showtime. The movie (Choup Soy) gets too many support, however, we can’t have many showtime for the audience”.

According to a representative of one cinema in Cambodia, “Actually, we can’t accept this kind of complaint. As we know, “Choup Soy” starts screening on 13^th April, which is the same date as one of the biggest movies of the year, “The Fast and Furious 8”. Besides this, “The Fast and Furious” is a very popular series movie around the world including Cambodia. And it already makes to the chapter 8 already, so the amount of supporters around the world is really huge”.

He added, “Saying like this, doesn’t mean that we give value to foreign movies more than our Khmer movies, but we just want to reveal the reason behind this. Back to showtime, we can see that, “Choup Soy” just has a few showtime less than “The Fast and Furious 8” only, but if it compares to other movies, “Choup Soy” has a lot more than them”.

However, we can see that there are more and more people come to watch the movie “Choup Soy” after the Khmer New Year.

In term of production side, we believe if the movie has produced with an incredible quality, which makes a lot of people come to see the movie, cinema will not give them less showtime since it also contribute more profit.

For instance, we see “Jailbreak” and “Tek Jet Mday Samai Tmey” movie, which just release this year, didn’t give any complaint about the cinema it all.

At the same time, cinema also still need to have a strong support on Khmer movies, because this will help to encourage local production or film makers to make more films and improve Khmer movie industry. Even the standard at local movie is still not be able to compare to international film yet. But this is all what they can do based on current resource and equipment.
