What Really Is Going On Behind The 200 People Video Calls, Especially with LINE
Nowadays, one of the most preferred ways using to communicate by business decisions-maker is “Video Conferencing”. Line Group Call has so far enabled users to conduct video conference calls with many people get connected at the same time. Have you ever wondered how Line Group Call comes up to 200 people work simultaneously?
First of all, we need to know what “mesh network” is. The mesh network is a low-cost way to connect network devices through wireless nodes without needing cables. In order to minimize the user’s traffic due to the high amount of users getting on the call at the same time, instead of using a full mesh, Line uses an adaption of the mesh network with a centralized server.

The server is then split into two, one for managing the Line Talk, whereas the other one is for mixing the voice and video. With one main centralized server, it will be easier to process both voice and video data, reduce the server traffic, which make the video conference works more smoothly.
Group call via LINE
Have you ever wondered how Line Group Call manages all the voices of all those 200 users during the video call? There can be many factors that may affect the sound quality of the call; thus, Line Group Call uses a Voice Quality Enhancement (VQE) software module to beat all those distracting noises.
Line will estimate how much of unwanted signals, such as echoes, and noise from environment, should be removed. For instance, Line’s module will estimate the echoes and noises, and remove them, while still preserving the users’ voices. Additionally, to eliminate ear-clutching moments, Line also uses the Automatic Gain Controller (AGC) to amplify or reduce the volume of different sounds.
Another thing to be curious about is, how does Line Group Call deal with the pixelation problem, so that the users won’t only sound good, but will also look great during the video conference call as well? To solve such issue, Line uses a multi-layer video stream, in which it will create videos in different resolutions.
There is a central server that will receive the multi-layer video stream that is captured and sent by the user’s device. The server will then combine those different layers and send the out the video with the most manageable resolution to other users.
And that is what’s going on behind the scenes of Line Group Call. Such a nifty yet complicated process, isn’t it?
