Hordes of well-intentioned foreigners pouring into the country have made voluntourism a booming industry in Cambodia. And since most volunteers choose to work with children, usually teaching English in orphanages, it’s creating a demand for orphanages.
Hordes of well-intentioned foreigners pouring into the country have made voluntourism a booming industry in Cambodia. And since most volunteers choose to work with children, usually teaching English in orphanages, it’s creating a demand for orphanages.
Organizations looking to capitalize on this demand exploit poor families by offering them financial incentives to place their children in these “orphanages,” and deceive foreigners into thinking they’re doing good.
A report from UNICEF found that 75 per cent of children in Cambodian orphanages aren’t orphans at all, but have at least one living parent.
This is only one of the many problematic issues associated with the voluntourism industry.
