Only two weeks after China’s record-breaking bridge over Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon opened, the world’s longest and tallest bridge has closed.
Managers were forced to close the bridge after being overwhelmed by over 10,000 visitors a day. The official opening was on Aug. 20.
Although many speculated the bridge’s closure was due to safety concerns, “the management committee said the closure was due to software and hardware problems due to the mass flow of visitors,” according to Chinese news service, Xinhua.
The load capacity was planned at 8,000 a day. There has been no mention of a reopening date.
The 430-metre-long bridge is suspended 300 metres above the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon, a UNESCO world heritage site. Its glass floor causes a vertigo inducing experience looking down the steep cliffs of the canyon.
